Here come the brides By GIANNA LISAC | city_chieftain.com| The Pueblo Chieftai Watch out Pamploma! Forget the Running of the Bulls in Spain, we have a Running of the Brides in Pueblo. Decked out in white and running shoes, Style Bride Boutique owner Mia Gonzalez and 12 ladies ran Downtown at noon Monday to kick off the shop's summer season. With an assortment of boutique friends, family and customers, the brides contingent made the jaunt to celebrate "National Decide to Get Married Day." The hourlong course began in front of the shop, which is located on Santa Fe Avenue, and proceeded up Union Avenue and back. Gonzalez's passion for all things bridal began long ago, she said, and inspired her to open her own bridal shop four years ago in the fall of 2007. "I was always intrigued with the sentimental value of wedding gowns and fashion, she said. Wedding dresses are things that are cherished and passed down from generation to generation." Gonzalez organized the event for the first time this year. With the ladies fully adorned in white clothing and their heads topped with fluffy white veils, local passers-by stopped in their tracks to watch the procession pass. While cars slowed and horns honked, the group traveled Downtown to show Pueblo what Style Bride is all about. Through the use of social networking, email and fliers, word of the event spread to some of the boutique's best customers. One event goal was to expand the store clientele, another to keep local brides shopping in Pueblo. "Pueblo locals are trained to go to Colorado Springs or Denver for their formal event shopping, but we have everything they need right here," said Gonzalez, whose shop carries merchandise ranging from bridal party novelties to formalwear. With runners ranging from preteens to 50-somethings, each member of the group ran for unique reasons. Stephanie Johnson, who took her sister along for the dash, decided to partake in the event to support her Style Bride friends. I like this store, it just doesn't compare with anywhere else in town, Johnson said. And one day I will be married and this is a great place to be for my wedding experience." The ladies hoped to boost the boutique and simply have fun. "We wanted to enjoy the weather and get people to notice us and get the buzz going about the store," said Gonzalez. She also hoped that the little stint around the Downtown area would motivate the ladies and bridal parties to lose weight and get trim. "We always have ladies coming in who are getting married but want to get slim before the wedding, so hopefully this will motivate them to do that before their big day," she said. The group said that next year, the roundabout Downtown will continue to grow and will hopefully become an exciting annual event. The ladies also hope to get some guys involved. Maybe with some male engagement, she said, boyfriends might be motivated to ask their girlfriends to get married.

I was designing wedding accessories, veils, jewelry in Beverly Hills and brought industry standards here.The company she worked for designed the dresses in The Runaway Bride, starring Julia Roberts, and for luminaries like Raquel Welch and Moon Unit Zappa.Were kind of a different kind of bridal shop, Gonzalez said of her seven-person operation at 315 N. Santa Fe Ave. We offer great designergowns and custom wedding gowns.I can complete a gown from scratch, from mapping the customer to sketching to draping.She said her shop can accommodate most any bride and her female entourage.We have wedding gowns from $250, and can do special orders, she said. We can do everything forthe bride and her party, from flowergirl up.Gonzalez said her shop also caters to proms and homecomings, from dresses to jewelry to other accessories. Music, make-up and the dress it all fits at Pueblo bridal fair

Make-up artists powdered cheeks, colored eye lids and stylists curled and arranged hair while photographers waited with their cameras at the ready. Dresses flowed and sparkled as the brides prepared to walk the aisle. The only things missing here were wedding bells and a noticeable lack of grooms. Then again, Sunday's Pueblo Convention Center Bridal Fair and similar events normally are female affairs. "It's always wedding season in Pueblo," said Elizabeth Gallegos, owner of Euphoria Salon, one of 25 vendors promoting services and products for brides-to-be and engaged couples. Weddings, from the proposal and planning to the vows and reception, are one of life's most memorable occasions. The most crucial aspects are the music, photographs and the wedding gown. The dress "is like a work of art," said Mia Gonzalez, owner of the Style Bride Boutique and Design Studio, 315 N. Santa Fe Ave. Gonzalez and her team make dresses from scratch, and were named one of the state's top bridal shops by "The Knot Colorado" magazine. "I love the fashion details in wedding dresses, the lace and different materials," said Gonzalez, a Pueblo native who worked a few years in the bridal industry of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. On average, Gonzalez and her seven-member team spends 100 hours making each dress. Ideally, brides should start dress shopping at least six months and maybe a year before the wedding. "You really need that time so we can profile them and make a dress that fits them best," she said. Wedding photographers? There were plenty to choOse from Sunday. "This is the first bridal fair I've ever been at," said Rocky Ford resident Paul Arellano. A professional photographer of 24 years, Arellano said he's seen the wedding photography industry change, locally and overall. He said he used to be one of two photographers in the Lower Arkansas Valley and now there are 13. "Nowadays, people hire someone because they have a friend who owns a camera. They may be creative, but the quality's gone down. It's like Walmart it's there but the quality's not. And that's not a bad thing. That's just how it is. I just try to be better than everyone else. I'm creative and I'm moderately priced," he said Arellano. With music, there's the dancing kind and the kind for the bride as she walks the aisle. The latter is where the harp and violin duo of Karen Anderson and Julie Wiggins comes in. Anderson has played the harp for 15 years and Wiggins the violin since she was 4. The Colorado City residents started playing weddings together a year ago. Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major" is the most requested wedding song, they said. String music just "brings a little elegance to a wedding," Anderson said.

Santa Fe Ave., is about fulfilling those dreams, says owner Mia Gonzalez, who terms the store's recent opening a wish come true for herself. The 1997 Pueblo County High School grad brings a strong background of education and experience that took root at age 11 when she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer and started teaching herself to sew.Her junior and senior prom gowns were original pattern creations.Fashion design school at Colorado State University at Ford Collins propelled her to Beverly Hills design houses upon graduation.She lists off the prominent bridal and lingerie industry names with celebrity associations like a bride ticks off her wish list.At Victoria's Secret, Gonzalez was in charge of technical design, making sure every lingerie fabric, lace and notion was in place for Sri Lanka production. While working for designer Cocoe Voci, Gonzalez met actress-musician Moon Zappa and helped make her wedding dress.One of Gonzalez' most glamorous associations was at the Renee Strauss for the Bride in Beverly Hills store, where off-the-rack dresses and custom gowns like Julia Roberts' dress in \"Runaway Bride\" were sold.\"All of the studios, Warner Brothers, Sony and Paramount, any time they would have a bridal theme or a wedding, they would go over there to either make the gown or borrow the gown,\" said Gonzalez.In 2003, her career nearly went academic when she returned to CSU to teach fashion illustration before another Los Angeles adventure.From the beginning of her fashion career, however, Gonzales, 28, says she always hoped to run a bridal boutique here.She said her store prides itself on stellar customer service, while offering gowns starting at $300, as well as high-end custom dresses.In her 11th week of business, Gonzalez says she's found most brides prefer a nontraditional look.\"They don't want the dress that looks like it's from the top of the cake, poufy and plastic and blasted with sequins,\" she said. \"We have girls with tattoos, second weddings so they don't want white, girls incorporating different colors, the different themes, the '50s style.\"Plus, Gonzalez, who says she's one of few custom designers statewide, can make a gown from scratch, perhaps starting with a magazine photo. She then adds \"a little bit of a twist\" in the bride's taste - whatever's needed to realize a bride's special dream.

By GAYLE PEREZ THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAINDowntown shoppers received a surprise visit from Elvis who was out spreading holiday cheer Friday to ensure people don't have a blue Christmas this year."I wanted to start out the Christmas shopping season by wishing all the shoppers a Merry Christmas," said Andy Sanchez, who donned the trademark Elvis white costume, dark glasses and sideburns along with a red Santa hat and cape.Sanchez, who was advertising the holiday sales at the Style Bride shop, stood at the busy intersection of Fourth Street and Santa Fe Avenue waving to passing motorists.Hoping to kick off the holiday season in a special way, Sanchez said he thought posing as Elvis Santa would be a great way to help put people in the holiday spirit. "I thought about wearing a Santa suit, but then I thought Why not an Elvis Santa," he said. "It's a little different, but it's also something that brings a lot of smiles."The Elvis suit was made by Style Bride owner Mia Gonzalez, who initially sewed it for a Halloween costume.Sanchez said he wore the costume on the warm, sunny Friday to promote the day after Thanksgiving sales and to encourage people to shop Downtown businesses this holiday season."We want people to support the Downtown businesses," he said. The daughter of Julie and Dale Olinger of Evergreen and the son of Puebloans Annette and Dan honeymooned in Cabo San Lucas for one week with plans for an extended January retreat to Tahiti.The Maytag Ranch at Hillside was the site of the yellow-and-white ceremony, where nearly 200 relatives and close friends shared in the outdoor nuptials. Invitees were bused from Pueblo to the meadow for the exchange of vows and luncheon.Hand-tied white roses and yellow calla lilies were carried by six bridesmaids who wore strapless yellow empire-waisted, satin-lined chiffon dresses. Jennifer's bouquet: yellow roses and white calla lilies. A father-daughter duo sang religious and popular songs.The couple's two dogs were led down the aisle by the flower girl and ring bearer. Folks from Germany and four states gathered at the superb venue for upscale Italian appetizers in the lodge before the buffet luncheon in a large white tent.Huge arrangements of yellow lilies, daisies and freesia in Mason jars centered the dining tables and large vases filled with lemons and lilies dotted the wine and cheese reception. Karen and Kenny Ginther, grandmother Pauline Taravella (celebrating her 99th birthday!), Josh and Jon Peek, Connie and Gene Gibbons, and Joyce and Vince Vigil admired the three-tiered Victorian cake with lemons, limes and miniature oranges between the tiers, topped with orange-tipped yellow roses."Diamonds and Denim" themed the evening dinner dance at the Colorado State Fairgrounds with 800 guests in a BIG tent. White-clothed tables were punctuated with more yellow-and-white floral arrangements in silver tins, Mason jars and antique boots.Carol and Tony Salas, Lana and Jack Hunter, Ross and John Patti, Lorrie and Gunnar Anderson and Betty and Andy Bigler were some bedecked in bling, boots, bolos and wide-brimmed Western hats. D.J. Tim Kiley provided country swing, polka and jitterbug music during dinner until the bride and groom kicked off the dancing to Triple Nickel with "Save the Last Dance for Me."Italian cookies and multi-flavored cupcakes topped with yellow and white rosettes concluded the fabulous festivities on a sweet note for Nici Book and Jef Macaluso, Shawnette and Jason Henson, Dee Dee and Craig Fetty, Melissa and Larry Martino and others. Guests were favored with handmade leather cases of CDs of the couple's favorite songs.Jennifer is employed as a financial analyst at CoBank and Adam is an attorney with Montgomery, Little and Stewart. We fulfillthe brides needs, wants and hopes.Wedding gowns range in price from$240 to prices in the thousands. Theaverage amount is $1,200, Gonzalezsaid.Andrew Sanchez, Style Bride generalmanager, said a custom design entailscreating sketches of the dress, attentionto detail and plenty of craftsmanship.The design of the gown should fitthe profile of the bride, Sanchez said.Gonzalez said custom gowns, whichshe tailors in her shop, are elaborateand time-consuming but well worth theextra cost.With designs from a book, you dontknow what they will look like on abody, Gonzalez said.The early part of the year is busiestat the shop, Gonzalez said.After the holidays and ValentinesDay, we get a rush of orders. Many proposalsare made during that period,Gonzalez said. It helps to get at leastfour months for a speciality order brides shouldnt wait until the lastminute. We want to make sure it comesin correctly.Outfitting a wedding party alsorequires good lead time, but Style Bridehas a full array of shoes, hair jewelryand other items.Style Bride also offers weddinggowns for expectant mothers.Yes, it happens sometimes, Gonzalezsaid. Gowns can be tailored toaccommodate anything showing.Sometimes they want to hide it,sometimes they dont care. Those marriagesusually take place very quickly,though, she said with a smile.Gonzalez, 29, and Sanchez, 34, bothgraduated from Pueblo County HighSchool. She has a bachelors degree infashion design from Colorado StateUniversity in Fort Collins; Sanchez hasa masters of fine art from ColoradoUniversity in Boulder.Gonzalez worked in Beverly Hillswith fashion teams that created gownsfor movies such as Runaway Bridewith Julia Roberts and Father of theBride.I've had experience designing 100percent silk gowns, the creme de lacreme. But we always work based onthe needs of the bride and groom,Gonzalez said.Gonzalez and Sanchez have beenputting in work at the shop for a yearand a half.We believe we will continue togrow if we can help make peoplesdreams come true, Gonzalez said.
